OUR Consulting services throughout a century of CHANGE

1968 BC Berlin was founded on the initiative of the city of West Berlin as a joint venture with the private sector. In the turbulent years of the East-West confrontation, the innovative services and trade-hub from the then frontline city of the West built a bridge across the Iron Curtain.

INNOVATIONS have formed the basis of our work ever since: always thinking one step ahead of the status quo. The solutions we have developed in Berlin over the years combine value-based socio-political goals with the technological challenges of the time, bringing people together and taking them along.

GREEN is not a color for us, but a way of thinking. Global sustainability, local participation and efficient use of resources are both the foundation of our work and the goal to which we are committed.

PEOPLE do matter. They matter when working with us at BC Berlin. They are at the focus of our moderated project team approach. Their local perspective counts and adds essntial value when implementing projects and introducing GREEN INNOVATIONS.

THE BERLIN WALL DIVIDES WHAT BELONGS TOGETHER

The Senator of West Berlin, Professor Karl Schiller noted already at the beginning of the 1960s that modern service companies would ensure the economic stability of the isolated city.
West Berlin was to become a hub for East-West trade, taking advantage of its favourable geographical location. The Berlin Senate wanted to support this trade by creating value from engineering and consulting services. Such services would not put additional strain on the already scarce land resources of the walled city. But it was to take several more years before this dream became reality.

1968

BC BERLIN-CONSULT GMBH IS FOUNDED TO OPEN GATES TO EASTERN EUROPE

In 1968, his successor, Senator Karl König pursued this idea further. In Kenya, he met German consultants from Bad Homburg. "Can you implement what you are planning?" Since the financial resources of a consulting firm are not sufficient to offer turnkey solutions, he concluded, "It can be done with the support of the Land of Berlin."
Only a few years later, the successes became apparent and BC Berlin planned, delivered and built projects in Eastern Europe as a general contractor with an investment volume of almost 900 million Deutsche Marks and often also secured the financing and operation.

A GLOBAL SERVICE AND TRADING HUB IN BERLIN

The technological know-how was to be exported into new markets, with new customers and different cultures.
In the years to come, BC Berlin offered consulting services, implemented feasibility and market studies throughout the world, from Xining to Yueyang in China, from Niger to Algeria, from London to Moscow and in other Soviet republics.
The sectors ranged from slaughterhouses to pizza production; from meat processing in East Germany, Poland, Argentina and Russia to the contruction of warehouses in Saudi Arabia and Mongolia.

REALPOLITIK: WESTERN WASTE FOR EASTERN LANDFILLS

West Berlin's prosperity and East Berlin's need for foreign currency came together in a 25-year contract for transfering West Berlin's ever-increasing waste mountains to landfills set up in the GDR. Up to 2,000 refuse trucks a day had to cross the border, and a new transfer station at Gradestraße was planned by BC Berlin.
As Berlin was formally administered by the three western allies and Russia, the waste of West Berlin was legally handed over to BC Berlin as private enterprise and then disposed in the GDR.
The latest waste management know-how acquired in this way formed a new branch of business that is still relevant today.

MANAGING THE TRANSITION
IN EASTERN EUROPE

The Nineties brought tremendous change to Europe. Eastern European countries and economies transformed to find their place within the post-cold war order.
Economies became market-driven, and the associated regulatory and administrative framework had to be established.
BC Berlin accompanied economic transformation and technological modernisation with its broad experiences in those countries, always combined with its up-to-date technological know-how. Daughter companies such as MC Moskau-Consult AG, DECON GmbH and BVC Berliner Verkehrs Consulting GmbH were founded, partially with partners and still active in the market.

ENVIRONMENT, WASTE AND GOOD GOVERNANCE THE PILLARS OF WORLDWIDE CONSULTING

Frank Eibisch joined BC Berlin in 2004 and became Managing Partner in 2006. Based on his previous work at BC Berlin, several years at the United Nations, and environmental consultant in Germany and abroad, BC Berlin’s activities were consolidated to its core competencies in waste management and environmental assessments. The solutions developed in Berlin focussed on technical know-how transfer and state-of-the-art consulting services with building the capacities in the target markets.

Renewable Energy SUPPLY and Energy Efficiency ARE added to portfolio

BC Berlin implemented its first project in the energy sector, e.g. as the transaction advisor for the RDF facility in Umm Al Quain.  In 2014, the expansion of the scope of services began by adding renewable energy projects. Shortly thereafter, energy efficiency came into focus as well. The transition was initiated by a framework contract with the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy for promotion of German climate friendly energy solutions in the MENA region, with projects in Saudi, UAE, Oman, Jordan and Palestine.

MODERATED TEAMS, DIGITAL PLATFORMS AND AGILE WORKFLOWS

Agile and traditional workflows, real-time cooperation tools and artificial intelligence change the world of consulting. Transparency replaces ownership, incremental prototyping and proof of concept compete with the traditional feasibility study report.
International exposure of our team, local insights during project assignments as well as the need for smooth project management and controlling: With the availability of the right tools, BC Berlin became digital and agile. And thereby managed to build 15 consortia in the renewable energy sector for the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action, while the entire world became homebound due to COVID-19.

Green hydrogen becomes OUR fourth pillar

With the increasing renewable energy supply, green hydrogen and its derivates emerged as a key enabler of the energy transition. And with the huge decline in the cost of wind and solar energy, a nascent global green fuel market is becoming an imaginable reality.
After several green hydrogen projects starting in 2020, this extension of our expertise finally lead to a new framework contract which is solely focussing on promoting innovative green hydrogen technologies from Germany and the EU in countries with developing economies as part of the international market ramp-up measure H2Uppp.

a Century OF CHANGE

1968 BC Berlin was founded  by the City of West-Berlin as joint venture with private shareholders. Despite, or rather because of, the impermeable wall that surrounded West Berlin, we began to build bridges across borders, and actually still do that today.

Our approach ties new technologies with human capabilities and local insights to power growth, innovation, efficiency, resilience, and advantage. Innovation needs to be aligned with tradition, taking people along and together. Disruptive advancement in technology we direct to be human centered and environmental friendly. Uncertainty in global environments can not be overcome by increased planning, but we assist and create advancement without loosing trackmanage with agile methods. And finally we find ways to gradually replace the depletion of resources by circular approaches.

Challenges were managed and turned into opportunities throughout decades, with BC Berlin as partner. We developed value and innovations for our international, national, private, and public clients. Besides our Berlin based in-house team, we employ international experts, all highly qualified in their area of expertise and for the specifics of the project at hand. Any deliverable is based on well-founded experience, evidence and quality assurance.
